In December 2007 I composed and recorded an album with the idea of a musical self-portrait. My last name, Wuolio, is an archaic Finnish word for a stream or river. In every place I have lived, there has been at least a small stream nearby. I decided to audialize my personal impressions and feelings about the flowing waters that had affected my life. The album starts with a piece for Perhonjoki, a small stream next to my grandparents’ place where I spent the first weeks of my life. The last song on the record is Portugal’s famous Douro, the big river that splits the city of Porto in two. I composed the piece as it was my wish to visit this river one day, and five months later my plan became reality.
